About Tornadoes
  About Tornadoes

Wisconsin is somewhat unique in that it experiences a wide variety of hazardous weather, including severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. Based on a 30 year study, from 1980 to 2010, the badger state has an average of 23 tornadoes per year. In central Wisconsin, the average number of tornadoes is 13. As with much of our coverage region, the official tornado and severe weather season runs from April 1st through September 30th, with July being the month of peak tornado activity for the state. Tornadoes have occurred in Wisconsin every month except February, and at all hours of the day or night. About roughly 90% of all reported twisters in Wisconsin rank from EF0 to EF2 on the "enhanced" Fujita tornado scale. Of those, around 8% rank from EF3 to EF4, and 2% rank EF5 on the enhanced Fujita tornado scale. While most of the state is just north of the northern-most periphrey of "tornado alley", the most reported tornadoes happened across western and southwest parts of the state.
Please note: All data contained on this page is considered "preliminary", and unofficial. All data is believed to be affirmed by the National Weather Service for the respected months, including the number of warnings and watches issued for the area. For official severe weather data, please refer to the NOAA publication "Storm Data" which is released by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC).

  • In the tables which appear below, you can obtain the latest tornado count from across the state, or the local central Wisconsin area. This count shows the number of reported storms for each month, and a final total at the bottom. Also included are the tornado totals from recent years and any reported deaths.
Where "DTH" means tornado deaths, and "ACT" means the actual number of tornadoes reported.
